In order to maintain an excellent record, we vet all partners thoroughly before we use them on any trips, and demand a continued excellence in quality to continue using them. Tours undergo a comprehensive risk assessment prior to departure. All Roots & Wings guides are professionally trained to proactively prevent and react to any safety concerns, including certification in CPR and First Aid. We have a 24/7 emergency contact system in place during any trip to promote efficient communication with participants, family members, school administration, and necessary emergency services. Finally, we are fully licensed and insured.

We are interested in a customized tour. What is the first step?

Roots & Wings is specialized in creating unique itineraries to fit the individual needs of a group. If you are considering group travel and would like a team to assist you to any degree, please contact us. We will create a preliminary itinerary and quote for your consideration in a timely manner. How does Roots & Wings design itineraries?

The itinerary building process is a collaborative task. In order to ensure all details of the trip meet your expectations, we provide a shared working document where all details and changes are updated in real time. After we have collected the basic information and particular needs of your group, a dedicated staff member will create an initial itinerary and quote using our network of partnerships and travel experience. As needs or details may change over time, we will update and seek approval for all adjustments.

What student/teacher ratio do you suggest?

We typically recommend a ratio of 10 students to each teacher or guide. This recommendation is adjustable depending on the group size, the age of the students, and the itinerary. We are able to provide as many guides as necessary to ensure a safe, high quality trip.

How many Roots & Wings staff travel with us?

This will largely depend on your group size and the individual requirements of your itinerary. However, in general we recommend 1 lead guide, and a second guide if the program leader does not wish to be part of the guiding team.

What is the approximate cost of a trip?

As Roots & Wings organizes customized and unique tours, the price of our tours is determined by the style of accommodation, travel, meals, and activities included on your tour. Our example itineraries include a price range of $1200 - $2500 per student.

Why are your trips so affordable?

We are a concertedly small business with streamlined costs and a commitment to value for dollar. We are persistent in our search to partner with accommodation, transportation, and activity providers who support educational travel through special group prices. These afford us the ability to provide competitive rates to our customers. In order to receive the best possible pricing, we recommend planning in as far advance as possible with us.

What kind of accomodation do you provide on Roots & Wings tours?

This is determined by your group needs. The accommodations can vary from hostel style dorm bed accommodation to 5 star luxury hotels. Typically, we stay in 2-3 star hotels in shared twin rooms with an ensuite bathroom and Wifi. As part of our collaborative process in developing the tour, we will provide you with several options to choose from.

What kind of meals do you provide on Roots & Wings tours?

This is a decision made based on the needs and desires of the group. We think it best to find a balance between local food and “known” foods to ensure maximum guest satisfaction. If there are any dietary restrictions, we are able to make accommodations and request as much advance notice as possible.

What kind of transportation do you provide on Roots & Wings tours?

Our normal mode of travel is luxury coach buses, which are checked and audited to local laws and restrictions. It is not required, however we recommend booking a bus with head, air conditioning, and a working emergency toilet. At this time, we do not provide a flight booking service for arrival to and departure from the beginning and end of the trip. However, if you are interested in this, we would be happy to discuss the options.

Do you provide travel insurance?

Roots & Wings tours highly recommends that all participants have full travel insurance, including accident and health insurance, as stated in our terms and conditions. We are currently working with an insurance company to be able to offer sufficient and comprehensive travel insurance in the future as an added option for students. We are fully licensed and insured for any emergencies or third party liability.

Do you provide updates and an emergency contact for family members?

All Roots & Wings tours carry a GPS tracking device. This enables family members who have been given a login code to “follow” the tour live on our website. We also provide a 24/7 emergency hotline that will be provided to all participants to share with family members.

Can you organize tours outside of Europe?

Yes we can. Though our focus on our website is currently in Europe, thanks to our vast international network and experience we can organize customized tours in almost every region of the world. Please contact us and we can provide you with more details.

Can we take a handicapped or special needs traveler on Roots & Wings tour?

We are able to provide you with an itinerary fitting the individual needs of your group. It is our aim to make these trips available to as many students as possible, and are therefore committed to this service. Please inform us about your special requirements, so we can do our best to ensure a smooth and obstacle free tour.

How do you manage risk as a company?

As is true with any travel to a foreign country, there is some risk inherently present. The best way to reduce risk is to be informed and prepared, and these are paramount in our planning. To minimize risk, our staff are trained to anticipate any potential issues and address them appropriately from the planning stages through the safe return of all participants. We have created a comprehensive safety plan to prevent and respond to any emergencies. In the event that something were to occur, our guides are CPR and First Aid certified with internal training in our Safety Response Plan. We are fully licensed and insured for all travel and activities in order to provide the most comprehensive service possible.

How will Roots & Wings help us with promoting our tour?

If you are organizing a trip which does not yet have a fixed number of participants at the time of inquiry, we are able to assist with tools to help attract students. Our level and style of involvement will be determined by your preferences. This could include but is not limited to brochures, posters, informative articles, answering student questions, etc.

Not at this time. The US government encourages everyone to go about their lives while being alert and attentive. The security level is primarily a signal to federal, state and local law enforcement to take extra precautions. However, we monitor government sites and utilize such information to make any necessary changes to ensure safety, and we err on the side of caution in the case of any incidents.

If you are over 18 on the trip, we want to make sure you have a fantastic trip - part of that means having the knowledge you need to be aware and responsible wherever you are. We respect your rights to make your own choices, and will be around if you need us.

How should I pack for my trip?

We will provide information about what and how to pack for your trip to your entire group closer to the departure. Just a few things to consider: the countries you will visit, the weather, the places you will visit (some churches require modest outfits) and the activities you will do. How long must my passport be valid for on international tours?

Legally, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the end of your tour. If you realised that there is a problem with your passport, please contact us or your group leader right away and we will do our best to advise you.

Do I need to get special vaccinations for my tour?

How can I avoid jet lag to get the most out of my tour?

After countless international flights across all the oceans, we have discovered the two best things to avoid jet lag: start out rested and stay hydrated. A well rested body has an easier time adjusting to the time change. Try to drink a lot of water while traveling. Part of jet lag is a dehydrated body and you can prevent that during your flight to Europe.
